| Welcome to The Dragons of Selzar. This place is designed as a Role-play site where you literally live as a dragon. You create your dragon character, join one of the three dragon clans, and then you live it's life as if it was your life, and adapt it to different scenarios that are brought upon you by other users and characters. This place is a lot of fun and that's what everything is all about. Come and Join our clan of Dragons! ~Silvera~ ~Head Admin~ |

The Art of Role-Playing: First off what is Role-playing, and what is an RPG? An RPG is an abbreviation for the term Role Playing Game which is normally some sort of story that the creator wishes to follow. The art of role-playing is where a user creates a character for the specified RPG world, and then starts living in that world as if they were that character. Short and simple. When you role-play you basically are living as which ever character you decide to create. How to RP: Now comes the more difficult stuff. Most RPG sites have a required literacy level and a minimum word count in order to keep up with quality in the site, but you're new to RPing and you have no idea how to even begin, let alone come up with a post that can equal 150-200 words depending on the site, (this site is 150). The primary thing that I tell people who have difficulty starting off, is to put themselves in the position of the character. How ever they would react to a situation is the way their character should react. For beginners, I would recommend your first character being of about the same personality as you would have yourself just to make things a bit less complicated from the start. Keep in mind, however, that, although you're putting yourself in your character's position and living as he/she is, you do not write in the first person. Wrong: I sat there, twitching my tale and listening to Silvera talking. Correct: Aries sat there, twitching her tail and listening to Silvera talking. Be as detailed as possible in your posts. You may not have a whole lot to do in a single post other than simply respond to and action or a statement that another character has already made in the RPG. Wrong: It was dark, Silvera was tired, so she went to sleep. Now, there wouldn't be anything wrong with that other than the fact that it's very vague. It describes what's going on with the character, but nothing about it. Correct: It had been a while since the sun had set beyond the horizon giving way to a night of stars. However gorgeous the stars were a long yawn escaped from Silvera's maw as she started making her way inside where she tucker her wings to her side and laid down for the night drifting into a solemn sleep. Both of those posts said exactly the same thing, but the detail that was put into the second post allows for other users to expand not only what is going on with the character, but also to be alert as to what is going on around them. Grammar Another thing to watch out for, never use chatspeak in an RPG setting. When you start role-playing, you should use proper grammar to the best of your ability. You aren't writing the next great novel in your RP post, however, using proper grammar in your post will allow the other people who are in the RPG respond and understand better what is going on. Wrong: after finishing her meal silvera made her way through the grassy plains in search of something fun to do or maybe even run across one of her old friends once she found that she was the only one there other than the various animals that were around she took to the skies and started heading towards the lake There is absolutely no punctuation in that post at all, and someone who would put a post like that on a forum would be griped at by the other members of the RPG horriedly Correct: After finishing her meal, Silvera made her way through the grassy plains in search of something fun to do or maybe even run across one of her old friends. Once she found that she was the only one there, other than the various animals that were around, she took to the skies and started heading towards the lake. Now in that post all of the proper punctuation (to the best of my ability) has been set in place. Asw you can see, it reads a lot easier that the one without punctuation so please do everyone on every forum a favor and use proper grammar. GodModding and Powerplaying These are teh two biggest no-no's on any RPG site or in any rpg. God-Modding is where your character basically plays god, and gets out of situations that would normally leave a users character dead or at the very least severly injured. Wrong: After running out of ammunition, Jim had to pause to reload his gun while getting shot repeatedly but assault rounds. after taking about thirty bullets Jim locked his magazing in his assault rifle and took out the last of the infantry with his last clip. If that, or anything like that shows up anywhere on the forums, it's usually a ban for at least a couple days. On this site the first offense of god-modding is a 3-day ban No person can humanly take thirty rounds from an assault rifle and survive. Thirty rounds from an assault rifle would be enough to kill a dragon, let alone a mere human surviving. The basic rules of God-Modding, know the limits of what your playing, and don't come out of every fight unscathed. Make everything as real and as natural as possible. Powerplaying is the act of controlling another users character without the consent of the other user. This is a big no-no as it is the equivilent of stealing in my opinion. Every user puts a lot of time in the creation of their characters. Respect that fact and also the fact that they have a certain style of which they want their characters to be protrayed. in the event that you do have their permission to play another users character, make sure to take a good look to how they would RP the character and try to mimic those actions. Below is an example of power play: Player A had Player B lined up for an attack and charged for his neck sinking his fangs into the base of the neck and tore a chunk of flesh out killing them immediately. This give the user controlling player B no chance to react to the situation and is forced to comply with whatever the other user has went with, in the event of powerplay of this nature on most site will normally result in a ban because it's against the rules of a majority of sites to kill another player's character without their consent as well. If they complain, the user guilty of the powerplay will usually be banned. This is how the previous statement should read to avoid the art of powerplay Player A had heard enough of Player B's bicking and disrespect towards members of his clan and charged at the other dragon aiming to sink his fangs in his neck with intentions to kill. Now, with the way that this statement above has been worded, Player B has a chance to react and either let Player A's blow hit him, or he also has the possibility to evade. Make sure though that if a player tries to evade that it stays in the realms of realism and doesn't turn into god-modding. You can't effectively dodge a surprise attack from a range closer than about three feet or less. Creating a character. Okay, so you now understand the basic concepts of joining an RPG and being able to have fun doing so within it, but how do I make a character? First and formost, every site and RPG has a different style of which characters can be portrayed on their site or in thier RPG. For Example, This RPG site is a dragon RPG site, however this is not the only dragon RPG site in the world, and each of the other sites like this one has special rules regarding to which how a character is to be made. By reading those rules, you get to learn what is allowed in the characters and what the restrictions are in others. Every site is different on these rules so you just have to read through them on whatever site you go to and find out what is allowed there and what isn't. Character Form: In most cases the character form follows mostly a standard line-up; Name: Age: Gender: Appearance: History: Picture: Depending on the type of site and what is allowed on the site and what not other option will be listed like; Desired Magic: Desired Clan: Desired Rank: Race: Faction: and many others the list goes on with possibilities and there are too many to name in one topic. Most sites, this site included will have the standard form that is to be used on their site in the same board where you would create your characters. That holds tru for this site as well as our character formate is as follows; Name: Dragon Type: (Wyvern/Western European) Age: Gender: Clan: Clan position desired: Desired Magic: (see Rules for details) Appearance: (At least 150 words or a decent paragraph of 6-8 descriptive sentences, and should include height, length, wingspan, eye color, scale color, and any other identifying markings that your character may have,) Personality: At least 100 words History: This is some what age based, but for everything other than Wyrmlings, I would like at least 150 words or a decent paragraph. The older the dragon the more history it should have. Picture: (Not requires but is recommended) Other: Anything else on your character As you can see pretty standard. Also note the highlighted parts as different sites will have different length requirements for different aspects of the character profile to make it more detailed so that everyone can understand the other characters better. Once you've read the character rules for whatever site your on, and have the proper format, all that's left is for you to be as creative as possible in your character. Remeber the most important rule in an RPG is just to have fun. I hope you that this Guide helps you in your RP adventures. Edited by Kari, Aug 3 2009, 06:24 PM.
