Avoiding a Mary Sue 101 Hello, and welcome to Avoiding a Mary Sue 101! For those of you not familiar with the term Mary Sue, it means a character exhibiting multiple clichéd characteristics which, in turn, render the character boring, clichéd and in most cases imbalanced. For instance, one trait of a Mary Sue is having too many strengths without the weaknesses or is too perfect. Always keep in mind when creating your character that we’ve all got our flaws and that no one is perfect. Often enough, Mary Sue’s get their way or do things because they’re Just That Special. There is a huge number of traits listed as Sue-ish, and I will give you the most prominent below. However, please note that having one or more of these traits does not necessarily makeyour character a Sue. Primary Sue Characteristics (In no particular order) a) Is your character described as being exceedingly beautiful in almost every post? b) Did you start off with that in your first paragraph? c) Is she an orphan/ important person without knowing? d) Is your character perfect in everything and anything he/she attempts and loved by everyone? e) All the time? f) Does your character have multiple weaknesses with no flaws? g) Is your character the only savior for a planet? h) Do many characters find your character unfairly attractive? These are but a small handful of Sue traits. You will better understand a Sue definition by the following example and understand how frustrating it is to RP with such a character. Mary Sue Name: Mary Sue Dragon Type: Western European Age: 17,66 Gender: Female Clan: Perfectus Clan position desired: Alphess Desired Magic: Energy: Mastered Darkness: Mastered Lightning: Mastered Appearance: As she’s been told, Mary is a startlingly beautiful dragon. Her scales shine a deep, sapphire blue, as blue as a clean autumn’s sky near sunset. The jewels that at her eyes are of a similar shade, so mesmerizing that they never fail to capture another’s heart instantly. Her gaze pierces right through to your soul. The membranes on her wings are as soft as luxury silk, lighter than her body’s scales, like a summer sky at noon. Black spikes run down the length of her back, the same color as the all-powerful talons. She is 17 feet tall from the ground to her shoulder, while her total length reaches about 34 feet approximately. As with all dragons, her wingspan is twice her length, around 68 feet in total. Personality: Mary is just one of those dragons that can’t help but help others, even total strangers. She never gets angry, no matter what, and is prepared to love everything and everyone, for she reasons that everything has a purpose. She’s modest and refuses to reply when others compliment her. Very friendly and playful, she quickly makes friends with everyone she meets and creates bonds that last a lifetime. She is willing to sacrifice herself in order to serve the greater good. Finally, she adores children and loves playing with them and teaching them tricks. History: Mary was born to what she calls the best parents in the world. For three years, she and her two sisters played happily in the den they’d created, their life just perfect. They were free and young, while her parents were the alpha and alphess. As they were so adorable, tey were loved by all and other wyrmlings loved to play with them. One day, however, her parents were killed by a band of robbers along with her two sisters and she was kidnapped. Thankfully, she was saved by her childhood friend, Gary Stu, who helped her reclaim her position as Alphess from the Betess that had seized power, later joining her as the Alpha. Other: Mary is probably the only dragon that can breath a combination of energy, darkness and lightning instead of fire, which surprisingly doesn’t tire her. ~~~ To put your characters to the test, you can take the mary Sue Litmus test and find out how Sueish your character is. |
