Name: Escyda (Eh-sky-dah) Nickname: Esca Dragon type: Western Age: 18 Gender: Female Clan: --- Position: --- Magic (Strength) Healing: Mastered Wind: Strong Energy: Very Strong Appearance: Esca has pale ice blue scales, the color of a sky just after dawn once the purples and pinks have faded from the sky. Two rows of deep blue spines run down her back, converging into a single line where her tail starts. Two ivory horns curl back from the top of her head. Her claws are pitch black and seem to reflect no light, even if it is cast directly upon them. Her eyes are dark violet and seem almost dead, showing little signs of a mind behind them, just pain, fear, and sorrow if anything. Her wings are vast navy blue spans of leathery membrane with purple-grey lines that look like veins running through them. Her teeth are white sabers held in pink gums and cage a violently red tongue. A jagged white scar starts beneath each of her eyes and extends to her jaw. On her upper left foreleg is a large deep blue metal shield that is fused to her skin. It grows with her and she can “feel” through it, as if it were another part of her arm. It is shaped like an eight-pointed star, the bottom point being longer than the others, almost covering the bottom half of her foreleg. One side of each point has a spiraling design cut into it. A round blood red jewel lies in the center, set in the metal. At the end of her tail is a cluster of spines positioned that same way as her shield, one being longer than the rest in the same manner. The blood stained remains of a thick chain loop around her right paw, a haunting reminder of her past. Esca stands 29 feet tall, is 60 feet long, and has a wingspan of 121 feet Personality: Esca is unnaturally quiet, usually only saying a few words at a time. She is very wary of new people, often going into a sort of “defense mode” when encountering them. She prefers to be alone, for she is afraid that is she makes new friends, her past may repeat itself, and she wouldn’t be able to handle that loss again. If anyone makes her angry, she will usually just try to get away and be alone, and if she cannot, she goes berserk and loses control of herself for a minute or two before she can get back in control. Should her heart ever open enough to make a friend, she will open up to them more than others, but it would take much healing before she can talk openly about her past to anyone. The one time she allows herself to be happy is when she is flying, but only for a small period of time. She will fight to help another if they are unable to properly fight for themselves, but will leave as soon as the fight finishes. History: Esca’s story begins long before her birth, back to the very dawn of the small clan she lived in. The clan was very close to humans, and having a bond with a human Rider was a common part of a dragon’s life. Once a dragon found a rider, the rider’s aging process slowed considerably, the dragon’s aging would match that of the rider’s. If one died, then the other’s aging would once again follow the usual for the species. Though this didn’t happen often, for usually the remaining member of the pair would die soon after, usually from old age or loneliness. The clan leader at this time was a powerful dragon named Toska and his rider, Nerathos, was a skilled mage. One day, the two were fighting a rouge and Toska suffered heavy damage to his left foreleg, a huge bloody gash. Nerathos couldn’t heal it without a patch, but the only thing close enough was his shield. In his moment of desperation, he enchanted the shield and fused it to Toska’s leg to heal to wound. The shield fused to Toska, the magic linking with his own and the metal melding to his scales. When he returned to the clan, the other dragons adopted the fusing of enchanted shields to their own arms, though they made sure that none of theirs surpassed his. The shields were passed on to the offspring of the dragons, due to the enchantment fusing so deeply, but they were actual parts of the child. A living shield. For some reason, any shields possessing a jewel in the middle allowed the dragon to bond more closely to their rider and in rare cases, let the one experience what the other lived through. It seemed random who was born with a jewel and who was not. A thousand years after the shields became a part of the clan’s history, Esca was born, one of a clutch of three. She was the only one in the past three generations of her family to have a jewel in her shield. She and her two brothers began their training as soon as they could, as was customary. Esca showed great interest and skill in fighting and in magic, even from such a young age. When Esca and her siblings turned three, their parents took them to the nearby human village to find a rider. Esca’s brothers quickly found two young twin boys that they bonded with, but Esca herself couldn’t find a rider. Most of the humans were afraid of her jewel, unsure of what it would be like bonding to her. Esca didn’t care, for she felt no pull to any of them. Until she came, a little 10-year-old girl named Ann. One of her legs was made of metal and moved using and enchantment similar to what had been embedded in the Nerathos shield. Ann walked boldly up to Esca and placed her hand on Esca’s snout, sealing a bond between the two. The two were nearly inseparable, be it training together or laughing at some shared joke while relaxing. They quickly found out that Esca was one of the rare few whose jewel allowed for them to share each other’s feelings. This only strengthened them more, and the two became a formidable team. By the time that Esca was 14, she and Ann were the ones to go to if you needed anything, be it healing or a job that had to be done, and they would try their hardest to carry it out. One day when Esca was 16, she and Ann were asked to go investigate rumors of a group that was capturing dragons. Nothing else was known, not even any speculation for why they would be doing such a thing. They set out the next day to where the group was last seen. They landed in the middle of a vast field. Signs of struggle were everywhere, but no hunters. Esca and Ann watched the area in case any one returned to the site, but no one came. They reported their findings to the clan elder, and the rumors subsided for a time. Esca and Ann returned to their normal lives, thinking nothing was wrong. Esca turned 17 as life continued peacefully. And then the disappearances began. Dragons in the clan began vanishing for weeks on end, only to reappear covered in wounds and occasionally missing scales. Some were found dead, but most were still alive. No matter how long they’d been missing or what had happened to them, all could remember only one thing about what had happened: They had been kept somewhere underground and far away. A few months after they first began, the disappearances started becoming permanent, and Esca and Ann were told to find out what was going on, since it could very well be the dragon-capturing group they had looked into before. This time they were told they were to find the prison that the dragons had been taken to. Ann and Esca searched the land for this prison. It took them many months to find it, but eventually they did find it. Ann knew they had to infiltrate the prison somehow and developed a plan to get in. She would pretend to be someone who wanted to join until she got enough people to trust her to not question her motives. Then, she’d ask to guard the dragons overnight. Once the humans had fallen asleep, Ann would release them and Esca would come in to help “incapacitate” the capturers, and then they’d all head back to the clan. Esca objected, Ann would be in danger and why would they believe her, but Ann wouldn’t budge. She would make up a story about losing her leg to a dragon and swearing revenge and all that, and if she got into any danger, then Esca could just come save her. Esca finally relented, admitting that it was probably the best plan they had. Ann joined and began working her way up while Esca would spend the days hidden in a nearby cave until Ann could tell her what was going on, which she would in turn tell the clan. Esca turned 18. The night came when it was time to spring their plan, but something went terribly wrong. Someone spotted Ann taking the keys to the cages and raised the alarm. Esca still approached anyway and was seen. As soon as she knew something was wrong, she fled back to the cave. The next morning, Esca came close to the prison again, this time being sure not to be seen. No one noticed her, and at noon, they sent someone outside with a message. They said that if she came there at sunset, they would let Ann go, they only wanted to talk. However, if Esca didn’t come, they would kill Ann, for she must not care for her otherwise. Esca did just that, and was surrounded quickly. She was to come with them, or Ann would die. Esca followed them into a large cell where a young and scared looking boy gave her the wounds beneath her eyes and collected the blood that fell from them. She was then locked alone in the cell. They told Esca that if she escaped or tried to fight them, they would kill Ann before her eyes. They wrapped the thick chain around her ankle to hold her, and though Esca knew she could just tear the chain from the wall, she didn’t, and put up with their verbal stings and the knives they used to reopen the wounds under her eyes each day, because she couldn’t let them kill Ann. Three weeks after her capture, they brought Ann before Esca and told her that at least one of them had to die today, and that Esca was to choose whom. Esca bowed her head and said that she wouldn’t mind if her own life was taken. Ann began screaming at Esca, but Esca kept her head lowered. They told her to hush and stop screaming, but Ann didn’t stop. Esca looked up just in time to see them stick the knife between Ann’s ribs and into her heart. Esca felt the bond shatter and lost it, breaking the chain and flying into a frenzy. She felt only rage while killing them all. She had no one to share her emotions or thoughts with anymore, so she cast them to the world, unknowingly forcing them to others. She made her way through the prison, killing anyone and anything in her way, her mind too shattered to think. It didn’t matter if they were other dragons from the clan that had come to try to negotiate a release, their riders, or if they were the same scum that imprisoned her. If it were in her path or moving, she attacked it. Finally someone managed to get an arrow between her scales, and she fell unconscious, the arrowhead having been dipped in a mild toxin. Upon waking from her drugged sleep several days later, she was confused and afraid. She couldn’t feel Ann, and everything was too quiet. With a pang of sorrow, she remembered what happened. She lay there for a week, waiting for death to come and take her. What gave Esca energy to live again was a memory of Ann and a simple thought. How no one thought that she would be anything special because she had been born without a part of her leg, but she kept trying anyway. And now that she was dead, Esca had to stay alive for her sake. Esca drew herself shakily to her feet and went to replenish her strength with several deer before walking back to the clan, still feeling too mentally and emotionally shattered to fly. Once Esca retuned to the clan, she was no longer viewed with respect, never again seen as The Dragoness who would leave no one unhealed and let no one down. No, now she was only a beast. Just a beast that had lost her rider and had willingly taken the lives of comrades with the enemies, a monster that forced her feelings to others without knowing. Others shrank away from her in fear, horrified of what she had done. She went to the Elder and told him that she was going. All he did was nod, silently. Esca left not even an hour later after burning Ann’s few possessions, the closest thing to building a pyre for her. She flew until her wings could no longer hold her in the air before crashing off the coast of Selzar. The tide brought her in to the southern shore and she continued walking, powered only by her own need to live before finding a cave to call her own, where she lives today. Picture: Picture of Esca’s shield and the spikes on her tail is coming Other: Esca has the ability to project her thoughts and emotions using the shield fused to her forearm. When she does, the color from the jewel in the center leaks into the shield, turning the metal red as the jewel becomes grey. Once it has finished, the color returns to the central jewel and the metal of the shield becomes blue again. It usually only happens when her emotions are very strong and defined, and at the moment, Esca has no awareness of or control over her ability Note: The shield is a part of Esca, and as such, she can feel it like we can feel our hands and feet. If it is damaged, it will heal, but very, very slowly. If it is torn off, then it cannot be reattached without a large amount of healing magic, and if it were not reattached quickly (even if the wound were healed), Esca would die. |
